About ALCRC

Dedicated to transforming the development landscape of Africa's 16 landlocked countries

Who We Are

The African Landlocked Countries Research Centre (ALCRC) is a dedicated continental hub committed to transforming the development landscape of Africa's 16 landlocked countries. These nations face unique and persistent challenges—high trade costs, limited access to ports, inadequate infrastructure, and complex transit procedures—that hinder their economic growth and integration into regional and global markets.

ALCRC exists to amplify the voices of these countries, working hand-in-hand with national governments, regional economic communities, private sector actors, and international partners to drive actionable research and policy innovation tailored to their realities.

ALCRC Team

What We Do

At ALCRC, we understand the critical barriers that landlocked countries face. Our work focuses on:

In-depth Research and Data Analysis

We generate robust, evidence-based insights that reveal the root causes of trade inefficiencies and infrastructural bottlenecks unique to landlocked economies.

Policy Dialogue and Advocacy

We facilitate inclusive platforms for stakeholders to engage in meaningful dialogue, promoting policies that simplify trade, enhance transit efficiency, and foster regional cooperation.

Promoting Best Practices

By identifying and disseminating successful models and strategies, we help countries implement practical solutions that reduce costs and delays.

Knowledge Exchange

We create networks and forums where governments, private sector players, civil society, and development partners can share experiences, lessons, and innovations to collectively overcome common challenges.

Our Mission

"To generate evidence-based research, foster regional cooperation, and promote innovative policy solutions that address the trade and development challenges faced by Africa's 16 landlocked countries."

Our Vision

An Africa where landlocked countries overcome geographic constraints to achieve sustainable economic growth, equitable development, and full integration into regional and global markets.

Our Values

Collaboration

We believe in working together across borders, sectors, and disciplines to create lasting impact.

Innovation

We champion creative and practical solutions grounded in rigorous research.

Inclusivity

We prioritize the voices and needs of the most vulnerable and marginalized communities.

Integrity

We uphold transparency, accountability, and evidence-based approaches in all our work.

Why It Matters

For Africa's landlocked countries, geographic isolation is more than a physical reality—it translates into economic disadvantages that can stall development and deepen poverty. Trade costs in these countries are among the highest worldwide, limiting their competitiveness and access to vital goods and services.

ALCRC's mission is to ensure these countries are not marginalized in Africa's growth story. By generating evidence-based research, fostering regional cooperation, and promoting innovative policy solutions, we work to dismantle barriers and unlock the full potential of landlocked economies, enabling them to thrive in a connected and integrated continent.

Success Stories

Over the years, ALCRC has contributed to significant policy reforms that have streamlined customs procedures, reduced border delays, and improved transit infrastructure in several landlocked countries. Our research has informed regional agreements that harmonize trade regulations, while our advocacy efforts have mobilized investments in critical transport corridors.

These successes translate into tangible benefits—lower trade costs, increased exports, job creation, and improved livelihoods.

Join Us in Our Mission

We invite governments, regional bodies, private sector partners, civil society organizations, and development agencies to join us in this mission. Together, we can create a future where no African country is held back by its geography.
