Landlocked Countries in Central Africa

Central Africa includes several landlocked countries; notably Chad and the Central African Republic. The absence of direct access to the sea has profound implications for trade, economic diversification, and development outcomes in these countries.

To participate in global trade, they depend on long and complex transit routes through coastal neighbours such as Cameroon, the Republic of the Congo, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo; making logistics performance and cross-border coordination critical factors in economic activity.

Landlocked countries in Central Africa face some of the highest transport and transaction costs on the continent; driven by weak infrastructure, limited transport alternatives, and procedural bottlenecks along corridors. Poor road and rail connectivity, delays at ports, and administrative barriers increase the cost of moving goods; reducing competitiveness and discouraging private investment. In this context, regional mechanisms under the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) and related initiatives are essential for improving corridor governance, facilitating trade, and strengthening regional infrastructure networks.

Despite these constraints, Central Africa's landlocked countries are endowed with significant natural resources and occupy strategic positions linking West, East, and Southern Africa. With improved regional cooperation, investment in transport and logistics systems, and targeted policies to promote value addition, these countries can mitigate the disadvantages of landlockedness. Strengthening partnerships between coastal and landlocked states remains central to advancing regional integration, economic resilience, and sustainable development in Central Africa.

The Importance of Regional Integration

For Africa's 16 landlocked countries, regional economic communities are not just political groupings—they are essential frameworks for survival and prosperity. Without direct access to the sea, these nations depend on regional cooperation to access ports, harmonize trade procedures, and develop shared infrastructure.

Each regional bloc has developed specific protocols and programs to address the unique challenges faced by their landlocked members, including transit transport corridors, customs harmonization, and infrastructure development.

Use the tabs above to explore detailed information about each bloc's landlocked members, key transit corridors, and regional integration initiatives.
