SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure

For African landlocked countries, infrastructure is more than roads and railways; it is the lifeline that connects people, goods, and markets.

The Challenge

Inadequate infrastructure, weak industrial capacity, and limited technological adoption remain central constraints. Poor transport networks and inefficient border systems increase the cost of doing business.

Case Study: Ethiopia

Ethiopia offers a compelling example of how African landlocked countries can pursue industrialisation despite lacking direct sea access. Through strong state-led planning and sustained infrastructure investment, the country has emerged as one of Africa's most notable industrialising economies.
